Why Do We Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi is a day when Lord Ganesha appeared by Mata Parvati through the idol made by Goddess Parvati from Sandalwood as per the instruction of Lord Shiva.

After creating that idol of Sandalwood, Goddess Parvati brought that idol to life and that’s how we can understand that Lord Ganesha is not a normal being but Lord Himself.

While the current celebration on Ganesh Chaturthi we see especially in Maharastra was started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Freedom Fighter) back in 19th century to unite the people and mobilise them for the Indian independence movement.

Why We Do Ganpati Visarjan?

Every year bring Ganpati Bappa in our homes is always joyful but for most devotees saying goodbye to Ganesh Ji and doing his Visarjan is very difficult as by the time of Visarjan we have built a lot of emotions with our Ganpati Bappa.

Hence, let’s just understand the science and the story behind the Visarjan of Ganpati.

As per the Sanatan or Hindu Scriptures, in Dwapar Yuga Bhagwan Ved Vyas Ji wanted to write Mahabharat or Jaya Samhita and for this he was searching someone who can write the scripture while he will going to speak the whole story of Mahabharat.

To help Bhagwan Ved Vyas Ji Lord Ganesha came and said that he will be going to help Ved Vyas Ji in writing the Mahabharat but there was a condition put by Ganesh ji that once he will start writing he will not stop and hence, Ved Vyas Ji also have to speak the Mahabharat without taking a break.

But to counter act this condition put by Ganesh Ji, Ved Vyas Ji also put a condition in front of Lord Ganesha that he will not going to write anything until he understand and approve that verse truth completely.

On the day, when Lord Ganesha started writing the Mahabharat was the day of Ganesh Chaturthi and it took him 10 days to completely write this Mahabharat.

But due to writing the Mahabharat without any pause, caused in the increase of body temperature of Lord Ganesha.

As soon as Bhagwan Ved Vyas notice this, he immediately took Ganesha to a near by river so that by taking the bath in that river Lord Ganesha temperature can cool down.

The day Lord Ganesha took bath in that river, was the day of Anant Chaturdashi. Hence, from that day the ritual of Ganesh Visarjan or Ganpati Visarjan on Anant Chaturdash (the 10th day of Ganesh Chaturthi festival) was started.

Ganpati Visarjan 2024: Date And Timings

This year as we have mentioned Ganpati Visarjan will going to be observed on 17th of September (Anant Chaturdashi Day).

After doing the worship or Puja of Lord Ganesha between 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM you can take Lord Ganesha for visarjan to the wholly rivers like Yamuna or Ganga.

Or the best thing you can do if you have Small deities of Lord Ganesha then you can take a bucket in your home and can fill it with water (can mix a little ganga jal or water of Ganga river being pious) and can immerse the deities in your home itself.

When the deities get completely dissolved in the water, you can use that water, for watering the plants in your home.

Ganesh Utsav 2024: Ganpati Puja Vidhi

Here is the complete Puja Vidhi for this Vinayak Chaturthi 2024

• Firstly, cover the eyes of Ganesh Ji when you bring him home before the installation of dieties.
• Clean the home properly and take a wooden table or something where you can install the deities of Ganesh Ji in your home.
• Before placing the Ganesh Ji on that table, take a yellow cloth (cotton cloth is best) and properly cover that table with the yellow cloth.
• Take some gangajal and spray it everywhere properly where you will be going to install the deities of Ganpati Bappa.
• Now place the Ganesh Ji on that table & chant loudly “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Mangal Murti Morya” & With that chant “Hare Krishna Mahamantra” as Lord Ganesha is the devotee of Lord Hari or Krishna & without the name of Lord Vishnu no yagya can be completed.
• After that remove the cover from the eyes of Ganesh Ji & do the Ganpati Aarti while offering the Ghee Lamp & Incense sticks.
• Make the sweet dishes like ladoo, modak, etc. and offer them to Lord Ganesha with some fruits also.
